Math Journals attempts to answer the questions: How can we help our students communicate mathematically, gain mathematical power, and develop a positive attitude about mathematics?
With all the emphasis to authentically asses students math progress using portfolios, the author has written a very practical book showing K-5 teachers how to use journal writing to asses this progress and encourage mathematical language. Each classroom-tested lesson provides a structure that will help teachers use journal writing to integrate authentic assessment with instruction. Students use diagrams, pictures, symbols, and words to explain their mathematical thinking, thus increasing their understanding of mathematics and their ability to express their ideas in print. A wealth of student work samples is included.
